ALBANY - Sen. Ted Cruz, R- Texas, is a rising star in the national political scene and has emerged as a leading opponent of the sort of draconian gun control measures that have victimized otherwise law-abiding New Yorkers with the passage of the NY SAFE Act.
So why would he tarnish himself by signing up as the keynote speaker at a political fundraiser for the state Republican Committee where he will share the spotlight with the man who contrived the greatest Constitutional and Civil Rights betrayal in New York State history?
We give Senator Cruz the benefit of the doubt. He simply may not have known he was going to be rubbing elbows with anti-Civil Rights hacks like State Sen. Dean Skelos during the $1,000 a plate party at the swanky Grand Hyatt in Manhattan. The annual state GOP dinner has Cruz booked as the featured guest and Skelos, the New York State Senate Republican Conference leader, is listed as a special guest.
The NY2A Grassroots Coalition and its partners have organized a massive public awareness campaign aimed at Senator Cruz and his staff. Their phones are ringing off the hook and their email in-boxes are brimming with messages from ordinary New Yorkers who do not want to be criminals.
These New Yorkers – of all political parties – are disgusted with the state GOP committee for not standing up for their rights when it counted. Unless they abandon the anti-Civil Rights politicians who are captaining their listing boat, our armada of privateers will sink it with grassroots candidates in primaries for statewide offices and the Legislature next year.
We call on Senator Cruz to decide if he wants to stand with the good citizens of New York, or cast his lot with a state GOP committee that’s too cowardly to make Skelos walk the plank.
